Review

This two-parter was first broadcast on 13 - 20 May 2006. A brief and somewhat spoiler-ish summary of the plot: the Doctor, Mickey and Rose travel to a parallel world and meet the Cybermen.

Let's start with the bad news about this two-parter:

this is a parallel-world story. Every science-fiction series will do one sooner or later, especially if the series is Star Trek. These stories very rarely have anything going for them beyond 'oh look, it's a parallel world, everyone's the same but different...' and this one is no exception

Nevertheless there are several things to enjoy here:

the whole thing is rather nicely done
we get some good bits of character development for Mickey and Pete Tyler
Mrs. Moore is a great character
the parallel world has zeppelins, which sadly are mostly lacking from our world

And, before I forget:

the Cybermen are back - and that's all there is to say about them, really. If you're a fan of 'classic' Doctor Who you'll probably enjoy their return, but if you're not this two-parter doesn't really give you any reason to be terribly impressed by them

My verdict:

Quite good, actually.

Not bad.
